Why have a Wood Rack?

A Wood Rack, can be made from metal, wood or plastic or a combination of all three. Typically it is used for storing your firewood outside, in a neat orderly manner.

Before commercially made racks were available racks were wooden. Often the firewood was stored in a wooded area and two trees were used to support the stack. I still have a wooden stack in my garden supported by silver birch. It tends not to be as dry as a commercial rack though. As with METAL designs ornate wooden designs are becoming fashionable for interior design. Whether a wooden or metal wood rack fits your interior decor is a personal decision.

For exterior designs it is easy to make a wooden rack, buy treated 2×4’s and depending on the size you need (I suggest you keep them short due to weight) make the frame with uprights at the end and try to keep the horizontal 2-3 inches off the ground. If you make a wood rack ensure you treat any cut ends with sealant to prevent rotting or bugs getting into your wood. For extra strength to your frame add extra verticals in the middle.

I tried this method a few times and although relatively cheap, I found the wood rack would ultimately break and I would have to replace the wood. In the long term I still think a metal rack might be cheaper.

When buying a Wood Rack:

1. Pick a material that fits your budget
2. Typically a steel rack will last the best
3. Try to get a powder coated wood rack to prevent rusting
4. Buy a size that matches your requirements
